Lisa Sanfilippo

London, United Kingdom
Anusara Yoga

Lisa Sanfilippo is known for taking her students to deeper levels of awareness and insight in body, mind and heart. Her classes draw upon smart bio-mechanical alignment principles, Tantric philosophy, art, and psychology. Lisa has been practising yoga for more than 15 years and teaching for close to a decade. She's taught yoga to everyone from corporate high-flyers to super-mums, from Board Chairs to people in wheelchairs.
Lisa's classes are dynamic- combining fluid movement and optimal body alignment: a perfect blend of 'intelligently playful' and 'movingly powerful'. Lisa's range of experience serves the needs of raw beginners through to those with decades of yoga experience. Her classes will both challenge and refresh you on all levels- with yoga postures, breath work, meditation and sound that help you to heal, expand your boundaries of possibility and ultimately enjoy living this life.
She established a dedicated yoga practice in 1997, a path that has inspired her to learn and to teach with great enthusiasm. As a student and teacher, she has three great passions: alignment that helps the body to heal; philosophy and enquiry that informs life's meaning; and building connections with healers, artists, and those who inspire her to continue to learn, grow and share. She weaves these loves into her classes, offering her students a chance to explore, learn, reflect and connect. She began teaching yoga to students at the LSE in 2002, where she was completing her Master's degree, and has taught ever since.
Lisa's roots in the yoga tradition go back to her childhood - when two of her family members stepped onto the path. Her uncle was a devotee of Baba Muktananda, and her cousin was a devotee of the Sivananda tradition, so it was normal in her family to spend weekends eating tofu and sitting on meditation cushions! When she first found hatha yoga in the 1990s, something clicked. She stepped onto the mat in the basement of her gym, guided by a neighbourhood yoga teacher and poet teaching in the Viniyoga T. Krishnamacharya tradition. She never really stepped off again.
A gentle and profound introduction to yoga helped her to heal from physical limitations - including acute asthma and nerve damage to her neck that rendered her unable to lift her arm higher than her head. She sampled the rich buffet of yoga styles offered by New York City for nearly five years, growing healthier and stronger. In 2001, she was invited to her first Anusara yoga class. Another click- as this method linked the meaning behind the practice with the explorations of the body that she was looking for. Since then she has trained with the foremost teachers in this and other traditions- accruing nearly 700 credit hours towards Anusara Yoga Certification and ultimately choosing to tread her own path.
Lisa teaches yoga throughout London, across the UK and worldwide, mentors/ offers supplemental apprenticeship by arrangement to teacher trainees who are on London's YogaCampus and Triyoga Teacher Training programmes, and devotes time to writing, creative collaboration and researching two upcoming books.
